  • This undated image from surveillance video released by the FBI shows the suspect known as the AK-47 Bandit. Federal agents found homemade bombs in the Montana home of Richard Gathercole a man they suspect is the “AK-47 Bandit,” who is wanted for a

He was apprehended June 20 after climbing out of a stolen pickup at the Nebraskaland Truck Stop in Lexington, authorities say.

FBI Los Angeles spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said the search was connected to a bank robbery investigation.

An observant central Nebraska deputy may have helped bring an end to a years-long hunt for a cross-country bank robber suspected of shooting at two law officers. Delivered at 11 a.m. Monday-Friday.

The robberies began in 2012, when Gathercole also shot and wounded a police officer in Chino, Calif., authorities said. "And he didn't. But I'm happy to say that no one was seriously injured before he was taken into custody". The FBI made the announcement in conjunction with representatives of the police department from Chino, Calif., where an officer was shot and severely wounded following a robbery there in 2012. Gathercole's arrest came the day after a man fired on a Kansas trooper on Interstate 70. The trooper was not injured in the shooting.

Chino Police Chief Karen Comstock discusses the arrest of Richard Lee Gathercole, 39, of Roundup, Montana, who is suspected of being the "AK-47 Bandit", during a press conference at the Chino Police Department in Chino, CA., Tuesday, June 27, 2017.

The AK-47 Bandit also robbed banks in California, Washington State, Nebraska and Idaho and he unsuccessfully attempted to rob a bank in Idaho.

The application to search Gathercole's home by FBI Special Agent Andrew Ubbelohde details one bank robbery by the "AK-47 Bandit" that FBI officials said was carried out by Gathercole: A 2014 Nebraska City, Nebraska, robbery in which $90,258 was stolen.

On Saturday, June 24, a federal search warrant was served at Gathercole's home in Roundup, Mont., where numerous Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were found, Pullen said.

Police from Chino, California, and Rexburg, Idaho, participated in the search, according to the Musselshell County Sheriff's department.

On the morning of July 28th 2015, a bank robbery occurred at the Heartland Community Credit Union in Mason City, Iowa. The suspect was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and wore body armor, as well as a ski mask.

One of those may occurred at a bank in Vacaville, California, in 2012.

Billings Police recovered several improvised explosive devices in Roundup at the resident of Richard L. Gathercole, who was arrested on suspicion of shooting at a trooper in Kansas Monday.

The search warrant application does not describe the other robberies. Musselshell County Attorney Kevin Peterson said that he doesn't now plan to file any local charges against Gathercole in addition to the misdemeanors charged in justice court. While Gathercole is potentially facing charges in multiple states, San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos hopes to have him extradited to Southern California for attempted murder of a police officer, a charge that alone could net him 40 years to life in prison if convicted.
