Facebook hits 2 billion users

Facebook as at Tuesday June 27, 2017; had officially registered two billion monthly users, its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, confirmed.

As little as five years ago, Facebook hit the 1bn mark as it expected to break into new markets in the developing world, eyeing up countries with enormous populations such as India. That means Facebook will have to display some astute diplomacy, or compromise some of its values about free speech and open information, to make it happen.

Facebook's achievement of 2 billion monthly active users comes with just a few days left in Q2.

This is the first time Facebook has changed its mission.

As per Zuckerberg, it took them 8 years to reach the 1 billion user mark, but the 2nd billion was reached within 5 years. And Facebook will have to spend more money to reach them.

Ever the optimist in what some see as a quest for worldwide mind control, Zuckerberg writes, "We're making progress connecting the world, and now let's bring the world closer together". Then, on August 27, 2015, he said 1 billion people had visited the site in just one day.

Facebook defines hate speech as "anything that directly attacks people based on what are known as their "protected characteristics" - race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, or serious disability or disease".

The company uses its huge size advantage to lure advertisers, offering them targeted marketing capabilities based on its data about users.

After you reacts to a friend's post with love, wish someone happy birthday, or create a group, you will see a message in your News Feed thanking you for doing so.

Facebook's announcement came as it works to redefine its objective, led by Zuckerberg who traveled the United States this year to better understand what people want out of the social network.

To hit 2 billion users during its second quarter, Facebook's monthly active users have increased about 17% compared to users reported in the second quarter of 2016.

The firm is launching a personalized video to celebrate bringing the world closer together.

Concerns were raised late previous year with Facebook's announcement that it planned to use a number of reputed fact-checker sites and otherwise liberal media entities to combat so-called "fake news".
