The 18-times grand slam champion, whose last title at Halle was in 2015, skipped the entire claycourt season after winning the Australian Open and claiming titles at Indian Wells and Miami this year, to prepare for grass.

Kvitova notches comeback win Petra Kvitova clinched her first title in just her second tournament since returning from a career-threatening hand injury, defeating Australia's Ashleigh Barty 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Sunday's Birmingham final.

Zverev, who beat the Swiss in last year's semi-final, had a chance to break at the start of the second set.

But Zverev, ranked No. 12, had no answer for Federer's aggressive play and near ideal execution.

Federer, whose first success at Halle came in 2003, has won 92 career titles from 140 finals.

Zverev is an exciting prospect and has shown great form so far in 2017, and has great power to his game, which he will have to use to full effect if he is to beat Federer.

This is going to be a fun match between these two talented players, as Zverev is growing up before our eyes and Federer is, well, Federer.

Switzerland's Roger Federer competes during the match against Russia's Karen Khachanov at the Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament in Halle, Germany, Saturday, June 24, 2017. "He could have been a little nicer to me", Zverev said. It pits world no. 5 Roger Federer against the word no. 12 and home favourite, and one of the rising stars in world tennis in 20-year-old Alexander Zverev. "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the tiebreaker", said Federer, who first reached the Halle final in 2003, when his opponent on Sunday was just 6".

Gasquet will play his first Halle semi-final since 2013 against either German fourth seed Alexander Zverev or Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut. "Mentally, I'm fresh again and I've gotten used to match play".
