Politico first reported Thursday that Sanders has retained a lawyer amidst the news that the FBI was investigating the bank fraud case. That bank loan was contingent on Sanders's promising that she had secured $5 million in donations and $2.4 million in confirmed pledges (i.e., donations that Burlington College officials had not yet received but that would be coming soon).

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders castigated President Donald Trump in a speech Thursday at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, accusing him of sliding America toward authoritarianism.

After months of murmurs surrounding alleged bank fraud, the FBI investigation into a $10 million loan took out by Jane Sanders while president of Burlington College has come to a head.

Toensing asked federal prosecutors to investigate whether Ms. Sanders had knowingly misrepresented fundraising numbers, committing federal bank fraud.

According to published reports, Sanders, I-Vt., will headline MoveOn.org's "Don't Take Our Health Care" bus tour, which has planned stops Sunday in Charleston as well as in Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The original request for an investigation into the potential bank fraud came from Brady Toensing, an attorney who chaired Trump's Vermont campaign, and whose January 2016 letter to the US attorney for Vermont put federal agents on the trail. Lawyers for the Sanders note the loan application was "approved by the financial board" at Burlington College and call any claims of pressure from the senator's office "false".

A woman listed as a $1 million pledged donor in the loan document that Sanders signed said she was interviewed by an investigator with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.in April.

During Jane Sanders' tenure, Burlington College spent hundreds of thousands at a woodworking school owned and operated by her daughter, Carina Driscoll.

Sanders supporter Rich Cassidy has reportedly been hired to represent the senator, and Washington defense attorney Larry Robbins has reportedly been retained for his wife.

"I filed a request for an investigation in January 2016 and an investigation appears to have been started right away", he said in an email. "Let me leave it at that because at this point it would be improper for me to say any more".

The lawyers representing Jane at present have contacted the former employee as well as a couple of former Burlington College trustees to get more information in the case.

"My only hope is for a fair, impartial, and thorough investigation", Toensing added.

In the past, Sanders, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, has referred to the allegations as "nonsense" and politically charged.

"Should we not read anything into you hiring an attorney?" she asked.
