GOP health bill: Big tax cuts for rich, not much for others

28 June, 2017, 07:55 | Author: Mae Harvey

Instead of voting this week, senators will hold off and do so instead after they return from the July 4 recess. There are seemingly intractable differences between senators who wanted the bill to cut even more benefits, and those from states where millions benefited from the ACA's use of a Medicaid expansion to help the sickest and poorest.

Members pushed off the idea that they'd be able to vote on the bill this week, but it's unclear how much substantive work is going to be done on its main framework in the next 72 hours.

The news that 22 million would lose health insurance coverage, from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), dealt a major blow.

McConnell said Trump has been "fully engaged" in the process, and will host all Senate Republicans at a special meeting at the White House at about 4:00 pm (2000 GMT) Tuesday. Only two can vote against it for the bill to succeed.

While Republican leaders are still trying to act as if this bill has a chance, without a complete overhaul, this bill will most likely have the same career Danity Kane once had.

Meanwhile, Democrats on the Hill were organizing news conference after news conference, including a large showing of Democratic senators who gathered on the Capitol steps to lambast the beleaguered bill.

"It's an ongoing discussion, and several of them want more time", he said of Republican lawmakers. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), and Sen.

The budget office - a federal agency that provides budgetary analysis to Congress - found that 15 million people would be left without insurance next year alone if the bill passed. So it's quite possible that the Senate Republicans can rise from this week's setback.

Moderate Republicans such as Sen.

It would let states ease Obama's requirements that insurers cover certain specified services like substance abuse treatments, and eliminate $700 billion worth of taxes over a decade, CBO said, largely on wealthier people and medical companies that Obama's law used to expand coverage.

Speaking shortly after McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was circumspect about the future of Senate Republicans' Obamacare repeal effort. The president said he's open to further changes and he's been talking to holdout senators about their objections.

One of the opponents, Senator Susan Collins of the northeastern state of ME, said proposed funding cuts of almost $800 billion in Medicaid, the government's health care program for the poor, "hurt the most vulnerable Americans" and that access to health care in rural parts of her state would be threatened.

Minutes after the report's release, three GOP senators threatened to oppose a procedural vote to begin debate expected Wednesday - enough to derail the legislation.

Those most affected would be people between the ages of 50 and 64 who do not yet qualify for Medicare with incomes below 200 percent of the poverty level, the report concluded.

Asked later if there needs to be more opioid funding in the bill, Capito said that was just one of the issues.

Separately, President Donald Trump has invited all GOP senators to the White House Tuesday afternoon.

Moderate senators are concerned about millions of people losing insurance.
