Justices to review New Jersey bid for legal sports betting

  • Supreme Court takes on new clash of gay rights, religion

In a surprise move, the U.S. Supreme Court announced it will hear New Jersey's sports betting case, according to multiple published reports Tuesday.

However, James Hallinan, a spokesman for New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas, says the Supreme Court's ruling only limited the venue in which Colorado can be sued for the harm done to New Mexico. The casino industry, after a period of job losses and closings, has lately been doing better. The case could be heard as early as this fall, and it will examine why sports betting is the most regulated segment of gambling at large.

A Colorado clash between gay rights and religion started as an angry Facebook posting about a wedding cake but now has big implications for anti-discrimination laws in 22 states.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the New Jersey law previous year, ruling that the statute violated the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 that forbids state-authorized sports gambling.

RUSADA was suspended in 2015 when its staff was accused of helping to cover up drug use, but will now have wide-ranging authority over testing. Lawyers for the Trump administration had also urged the Supreme Court not to take up Christie's appeal.

"I applaud the Supreme Court for taking on this case and potentially resolving a long history of hypocrisy and unfairness in federal law", Pallone said in a statement. New Jersey voters passed a non-binding referendum to allow sports betting in 2011.

The decision to take on the case reflects renewed energy among the court's conservative justices, whose ranks have recently been bolstered by the addition of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the high court. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act [text] prohibits most states from operating a gambling system based on professional or college sports.

Of course people do it anyway - for instance, of the $10.4 billion bet on March Madness games this year across the US, only an estimated $295 million of it was done legally.

Congress gave New Jersey a one-time opportunity to become the fifth state before the ban was enacted, but the state failed to pass a sports betting law in the required time window. "PASPA, which is approaching its 25th anniversary, is fueling an unregulated $150 billion illegal gambling market that continues to deprive states of vital public funding for services such as law enforcement and infrastructure".
