Supreme Court partially lifts embargo on Trump's order — Travel Ban

The Supreme Court has reinstated parts of President Donald Trump's ban on travel from six Muslim-majority countries.

The Supreme Court ruled to reinstate part of the travel ban for individuals without a "bona fide relationship" with the US, and this partial ban will go into effect on Wednesday, 72 hours after the issuance of the Court's ruling.

Mr Trump said last week that the ban would take effect 72 hours after being cleared by the courts.

The State Department has said that the few remaining refugees to be admitted this year will not have to prove a "bona fide relationship". Although the justices partially lifted lower courts' injunctions on Trump's ban, they said they would take up the case fully in their October term.

The Trump administration has been fighting back against lower court rulings that have struck down the travel ban.

"As president, I can not allow people into our country who want to do us harm." he said in a statement.

Importantly, the court did not decide that the ban is legal regarding those individuals, only that the government may implement that limited version of the ban while it considers the legal questions.

The Supreme Court defined such relationships as family connections for individuals, admittance to a USA school for students, and a job offer for workers.

Shortly after the court's ruling, the State Department notified all US diplomatic posts of the decision and advised them to await instructions that would be forthcoming by the self-imposed implementation deadline on Thursday, according to officials familiar with the situation.

The ruling also said it would permit a 120-day ban on all refugees entering the USA to go into effect. In a separate opinion written by Justice Thomas, they said they would have removed the stays of the travel ban in their entirety. Refugees who have some connection to the United States may not be summarily blocked from entry; those who have none may be blocked from entry. Nauert clarified that refugees who hold a "bona fide relationship to the U.S." will be unaffected by the administration's 50,000 cap. He said his group has no idea how the administration plans to judge family relationships and a hard line could mean a significant number of Iranians will be kept out the country for the time being. For one thing, people who never been in the United States and have no connection with anybody in the United States might not have any constitutional rights to begin with.

The Supreme Court made clear in its decision that the Trump administration must now review its vetting procedures for immigration with the six named majority-Muslim countries.

A Not yet. The court's ruling on the travel ban applies only between now and when the justices make a final ruling, which might not come until late autumn. The Ninth Circuit blocked both the limits on travel and the suspension of the refugee program on statutory grounds, calling it an overextension of the authority granted to the Executive by Congress.
