Modi later joined Trump and the first lady for dinner at the White House.

With an eye on China and the disputes in the South China Sea, Modi and Trump after their meeting in the White House called for freedom of navigation and resolving of territorial and maritime disputes peacefully in accordance with global law.

"The relationship between the United States and India is very, very strong and very, very powerful", Trump said. "Reflecting the partnership, the USA has offered for India's consideration the sale of Sea Guardian Unmanned Aerial Systems, which would enhance India's capabilities and promote shared security interests", the joint statement said.

"My visit and our talks today will mark a very important page in the history of the collaboration and cooperation between our two nations", Modi said.

India and the United States have called on Pakistan urging it to ensure that its territory is not used to launch cross-border terror strikes.

The Kashmir Peace Council Holland (KPC) and Kashmir Council Europe (KC-EU) organised a protest here in the capital city to protest Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Netherlands.

India appreciated the USA decision to designate the Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist - just ahead of the Trump-Modi meet of Monday - "as evidence of the commitment of the United States to end terror in all its forms".

"On defence cooperation, there was a sense that combination of convergence and regular exchanges on policy, the fact that today we are major partners in exercises with each other, all these underline the fact that India and the USA recognise each other key defence partners", foreign secretary S. Jaishankar told reporters at a news conference.

He thanked PM Modi fro inviting his daugher Ivanka to lead the USA delegation to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in India this fall and said, "I believe she has accepted".

"We will enhance the intelligence exchange to boost coordination to address our common concerns over terrorism and will deepen our policy coordination accordingly".

"Both - India and the US - are global engines of growth".

"It is important that barriers be removed to the export of USA goods into your markets and that we reduce our trade deficit with your country", Trump said.

Modi gave Trump a bear hug during their joint appearance before then showering praise on the United States leader.

The two leaders also resolved to pursue increased commercial engagement in a manner that advances the principles of free and fair trade, the statement said.

He said the Indian diaspora are the links and bridge between the people of two countries.

Describing both countries as "global engines of growth", the prime minister said trade, commerce and investment are key areas of mutual cooperation.

Modi came to Washington looking to revitalise a relationship that thrived under former President Barack Obama but has appeared to flag as Trump courted India's rival China in an effort to persuade Beijing to do more to rein in North Korea. He wants India to import American natural gas and did not forget to add, like a true businessman, that the prices were being negotiated - "trying to get the price up a little bit"! We hope we're going to be catching you very soon in terms of percentage increase, I have to tell you that.
