Trump working to woo 'no' senators

  • From Birth To Death, Medicaid Affects The Lives Of Millions

Facing a potentially disastrous defeat by members of his own party, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell decided on Tuesday to delay a vote on healthcare legislation in order to get more support from Republican senators.

Collins has said she is considering a run for ME governor next year. "I am pleased with the decision to delay the vote - now is the time to take a step back and put the full legislative process to work".

"We're still working toward getting at least 50 people in a comfortable place", McConnell said, adding that he is "optimistic" the stymied bill will get through the chamber.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, told reporters, "The hope is that we can at least have an agreement on what we can get enough votes on this week and turn to it as soon as we come back" from July 4 recess. Susan Collins, who has strongly opposed the legislation.

McConnell had been pushing for a vote ahead of the July 4 recess that starts at the end of the week. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll showed just 16 percent of Americans thought the House health care bill "was a good idea". His spokesman, Conn Carroll, said Tuesday that Lee would not vote to commence debate on the bill "as it is now written", a roll call that's expected Wednesday.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul tweeted about his visit, saying he was: "Headed to meet with @realDonaldTrump this afternoon".

"Vote after break. McConnell wants to win". It's melting down as we speak.

McConnell says the White House is "very anxious to help" and encouraged senators to go to the meeting.

Before the Senate can begin debate on most legislation, the senators must either unanimously agree to consider it or the majority leader must offer a "motion to proceed" to consideration of that bill.

The dissension is swelling after Congress' nonpartisan budget referee said the high profile measure would leave 22 million more people uninsured by 2026 than President Barack Obama's law, which the GOP wants to scrap.

Other senators who have proclaimed their opposition, including Sen. Lisa Murkowski, said they were concerned about the bill but neither said they were ready to vote against debating it.

Portman has been seen as a critical voice on the Republican health care bill and was publicly undecided until Tuesday.

The act, which faces staunch opposition from Democrats, could further result in a reduction of the cumulative federal deficit by $321 billion by 2026, largely due to cuts in Medicaid spending, according to the CBO's report.

But among more moderate Republicans, the biggest issue with the overhaul effort isn't an issue of conservatism at all- it's a Congressional Budget Office report revealing that the current bill will bring steep cuts, to the tune of $772 billion, to Medicaid over the next decade.

But the office said that overall, the Senate legislation would increase out of pocket costs for deductibles and copayments.
