White House press secretary Sean Spicer refused to comment on Tuesday on President Donald Trump's thoughts on Russian meddling in the 2016 election, a weird move considering the issue's prominence in the news cycle for months.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer takes a question at a press briefing at the White House on June 20, 2017.

Pressed again for an answer - given that the heads of multiple agencies in the intelligence community, including former FBI Director James Comey, have said Russians definitely interfered in the election - he had a similar response.

"We have a tremendous respect for the First Amendment, our ability and your ability to do your job, to report and seek out ideas", Spicer told the White House press corps.

Some even suggested the only person who should replace Spicer is McCarthy.

When asked Tuesday if Trump believed Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 presidential election, as the US intelligence community determined in January, Spicer said he wasn't sure.

"When we have an announcement on personnel, we'll let you know", Spicer said.

Mike Dubke resigned as White House communications director last month after a series of legal and political threats began to torment the administration.

It came after his colleague, White House advisor Stephen Bannon, told a reporter the reason Spicer had stopped on-camera briefings was that "Sean has gotten fatter".

The Associated Press also reports that conservative radio host Laura Ingraham and Daily Mail editor David Martosko have been in talks to fill senior positions in the White House communications office.

In recent weeks, the White House has taken to holding some press briefings off-camera, presumably in an effort to tamp down the media circus surrounding Donald Trump. I think the briefing is one aspect of what we do.

That Spicer has become an object of ridicule for "Saturday Night Live" and the late-night shows has not been lost on the right. "But it's our job to make sure that we're providing updates and readouts of what the president is doing and the advances he is making on his agenda".

"It feels like we're slowly but surely being dragged into what is a new normal in this country where the president of the United States is allowed to insulate himself from answering hard questions".
