  • Brian Head Fire continues to threaten homes

Winds are expected to be coming out of the west at about 10 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 30 miles per hour Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

"Horse Valley will be an area of concern (Monday), but crews have begun to prepare for this using dozers and retardant dropped from air tankers to establish indirect firelines", the town of Brian Head said on its Facebook page. The blaze has since spread about 20 miles east, near Panguitch Lake, according to the Associated Press.

Steve Bloch, legal director of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, said Noel's assertion is an over-simplification of wildfires that are the result of fire suppression, climate change, drought and unpredictable winds. Meanwhile, firefighters in Santa Margarita were able to contain about 40 percent of the fire, which scorched about two square miles of land on Tuesday. Officials have said the blaze near the ski town of Brian Head was sparked June 17 by a weed-burning torch.

"Things change day-to-day", Wilder said.

As for the wildfires in California, about 10 percent of the blaze scorching up Riverside County-80 miles from Los Angeles-has been contained, according to local reports.

Two people were hospitalized in the solo-vehicle crash and subsequent auto fire that caused the wildfire on Monday afternoon.

A wildfire continued to surge out of control early Tuesday near vineyards on California's Central Coast has forced about 250 people to evacuate from their homes.

The Frye Fire in southern Arizona covered more than 37,000 acres as of Sunday, with 39% of the perimeter contained, the forest service at Coronado National Forest said.

At Brian Head Resort, officials are hoping that hot spots near where the blaze started will calm down enough to allow officials to lift the evacuations in time for 4th of July festivities that usually bring an estimated 15,000 people to listen to music and watch fireworks, resort spokesman Mark Wilder said.

Approximately 1,500 people - including seven residents asked to leave the Bear Valley area overnight as a precaution - remained evacuated as of Tuesday morning. Do they know how the fire started? Yes.

CAL FIRE said on June 22 that firefighters have responded to 1,878 wildfires, burning over 19,000 acres, since January 1, representing a threefold increase compared with the same time past year.

Nearly 300 miles north of the Frye Fire, the Goodwin Fire in Mayer, Arizona gained ground on Tuesday night, authorities said.
