Kate, who styled her new short 'do in loose curls, wore a pale blue Preen dress by designer Thornton Bregazzi and sky-high Prada sandals with wavy straps that she first wore during her royal tour of India past year.

The Duchess of Cambridge will join Sir David Attenborough today at the Natural History Museum for the unveiling of its latest attraction in the vast Hintze Hall.

Kate revealed the dinosaur was a favourite for her young children George and Charlotte and spoke of her joy at watching them both fall in love with nature.

The whale skeleton has replaced Dippy the Diplodocus, which first went on display there in 1979.

Hope is a real blue whale skeleton measuring 25.2m and is suspended from the ceiling. The museum chose to name the whale "Hope" saying it was "a symbol of humanity's power to shape a sustainable future".

"Who could fail to be inspired standing here in this wonderful hall. The transformation of Hintze Hall represents a new era for us as a natural history museum for the future".

Hintze Hall has another 10 new displays all chosen from the museum's collection of more than 80 million specimens.

These include giraffes, a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite, and one of the most complete dinosaur fossils ever discovered in the United Kingdom - a Mantellisaurus.

Its position in the main entrance hall is created to be a "powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the responsibility humans have towards protecting our planet", said museum director Michael Dixon.

The exhibition will be open to the public from Friday (14 July).
