British Grand Prix: Hamilton holds off Raikkonen and Vettel to take pole

Hamilton set the ball rolling with 1m 29.544s on soft tyres before Bottas trimmed that to 1m 29.393s, as Raikkonen used supersofts for 1m 29.897s in his Ferrari.

Vettel later apologised to both the FIA and Hamilton - but Horner believes his former driver, who idolised his compatriot Schumacher as a child, has adopted his hero's win-at-all costs mentality.

"In the first session, the balance was not too far away, so a positive start. It was already one of the very best circuits in the world, but with this vehicle and the speed we are able to carry through the corners, it's just phenomenal", said Hamilton.

"I felt that it's been a pretty intense season and I needed to prepare the best way I could for this weekend", said Hamilton, whose name drew boos when it was read out at the event in London.

Vettel, who has been so consistent this season, was only fourth here, four 10ths of a second slower than the Mercedes pair.

"Most important is that the vehicle is good, we improved it today and tomorrow should be better", he said. "The track is absolutely incredible with these new cars". We have decisions to make and you have to stand by them and feel proud and I do.

Since Hamilton rejected the invitation, Valtteri Bottas was the only Mercedes driver to attend.

"Forward vision is not very good". Caught out on slicks, Verstappen ran wide at Brooklands and returned slowly to the pits after a slightly comedic moment when Red Bull informed him of yellow flags at Turn 7, to which the teenager replied: "Yeah, that's because of me!"

"For us there's not so much of a difference, so let's see tomorrow".

"Overall it was a bit mixed for us today".

Forecaster Katie Greening, of The Weather Channel, said: "There will be a dry end to the week and into the start of the weekend but with variable cloud amounts".

As is often the case in the early stages of FP1, the teams sought to try out new setups and add-ons. "We still need to work".

"We can definitely improve from where we are".

Hamilton's drama suggested there is still time to come from the Mercedes W07, which finished 0.332s up on the quickest Ferrari. Daniel Ricciardo was seventh fastest for Red Bull but also has a five-place grid penalty hanging over him for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Hamilton, who was just opening his first qualifying run, was investigated by stewards after the session over the incident. Esteban Ocon rounded out the top ten for Force India.
