'Ladies & gentlemen' scrapped to make London Tube announcements gender neutral

  • Transport for London scraps 'ladies and gentlemen' from Tube tannoy announcements in gender-neutral move

Aimee Challenor, a 19-year-old trans campaigner who has always been fighting for this shift, said it was a "positive commitment from TfL", but urged the organisation to formalise the move.

Transport for London (TfL), the government body responsible for the Tube, said their employees will soon begin using good morning or good afternoon "everyone" as an alternative to phrases such as "ladies and gentleman".

'We have reviewed the language that we use in announcements and elsewhere and will make sure that it is fully inclusive, reflecting the great diversity of London'. The change comes in an effort to be more gender neutral and more inclusive of people who do not identify with binary gender labels.

"These diverse identities are increasingly recognised and respected within society. Another wrote: "Ridiculous, What is wrong with 'ladies and gentlemen"?!"

Equality campaigner and transgender woman Aimee Challenor, who first pushed Mayor Sadiq Khan to take action in December a year ago, called it a "positive commitment from TfL" but that there still is confusion among staff over which terms to use.

Challenor, 19, welcomed the change, saying the terms "hello everyone" or "all passengers for..." would be more appropriate.

"People are saying it's such a small thing, and get a life, but it's these little things which can make people's lives better", Challenor told the Evening Standard.

Erking, a German living in London, said she believed other global cities would eventually follow suit.

Khan said that TfL has instructed its staff to use gender-neutral phrasing.

"But hearing these announcements - we are living in the 21st century, not the 19th", she added. As Danny Boyle of the Telegraph reports, transit officials have chose to boot "ladies and gentlemen" from announcements on the Tube, opting instead for gender-neutral greetings.

He said: "I am aware, however, that some customers may not relate to or feel comfortable with the way that certain station announcements are made".

All new pre-recorded announcements are set to be changed, and written guidance given to staff will be reviewed and changed. "If this happens frequently, we will issue reminders to staff", TfL said.
