South Africa bowl out England for 205 in second Test

  • England vs South Africa: Kagiso Rabada's ban is 'a big loss' for Proteas and cricket, says Dean Elgar

Keshav Maharaj and Chris Morris were at the centre of South Africa's sensational comeback in the day, sharing three wickets apiece.

But it was the loss of Root sent England once again into a downward spiral and, although Jonny Bairstow stuck around to reach 45, Ben Stokes (0), Moeen Ali (18) and Stuart Broad (0) - all of whom played starring roles in the first innings at Lord's - failed to fire. Since England and South Africa first met in March 1889 in Port Elizabeth their meetings - and non-meetings - have provided some of the most memorable episodes in cricket history.

Skipper Joe Root and Gary Ballance then tried to steady the ship with a second-wicket partnership of 83 runs.

Dawid Malan recently stepped up to worldwide cricket and looked the part in England's third T20 win over South Africa in Cardiff.

The steady start to their second innings meant South Africa led by 205 runs at the close and England would have been glad to get off and start fresh today.

England, however, lost eight Tests past year and Root is wary of letting complacency creep in.

His technique dictates that he so likely to be trapped on the crease coming forward, as he was in the first innings at Lord's, that all top fast bowlers seem able to set him up for doing so. Anderson picked up three more wickets to finish with figures of 5-72 as South Africa crumbled from 309-6 to 335 all out.

Root's dismissal in the afternoon session, edging behind after going hard at Morne Morkel, was to precipitate the collapse that saw his team lose their final seven wickets for 62 runs.

Alastair Cook (three) was caught behind when he got an inside edge to Vernon Philander's inswinger, the former captain out on review.

"Joe Root was fantastic and played a great counter attacking knock when we were struggling". He ended the innings when Morkel was caught behind.

It took him only five deliveries to break the seventh-wicket stand when Philander went without addition to his overnight 54, via a leading edge into the off-side ring.

Transformation is created to cope with the legacy of apartheid, when largely only white players such as Pollock, one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history, were allowed to play for official South Africa sides. Kuhn faced 42 balls for two single-figure scores at Lord's, undone by a flawless Stuart Broad delivery in the first innings and perhaps a little unlucky to edge James Anderson down the leg side second time out.

Broad has particularly fond memories of England's last visit to Trent Bridge - where Broad also plays his county cricket - as Australia were skittled out for just 60 in 2015, with Broad starring, taking 8-15.
