  • Carolina Panthers NFL football team general manager Dave Gettleman speaks during a news conference in Charlotte N.C. Gettleman isn't second-guessing the team's decision to allow quarterback Cam Newton

Gettleman was hired as the Panthers' general manager in 2013.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have chose to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager", Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in a release announcing the decision.

Despite those pleas, some of which got awfully intense, Norman is only entering the second year of a five-year contract with the Redskins and should remain in the Burgundy and Gold for a while.

Now-retired receiver Steve Smith Sr. also had his say in the most Steve Smith way possible.

Several former Carolina Panthers players have already expressed joy over the team firing general manager Dave Gettleman on Monday, and there may be at least one member of the current roster who shares in their excitement.

He wasn't entirely wrong: Smith racked up 139 receiving yards and two TDs against the Panthers in his fourth game with the Ravens, a 38-10 victory.

Before coming to Carolina, Gettleman spent nearly three decades in National Football League scouting departments.

Carolina's all-time leading rusher, Williams was cut by Gettleman following an injury-shortened 2014 season.

"There was a couple of things that upset me about the Panthers when my mom died", Williams told WBTV via ESPN.

Richardson also acknowledged the timing is not ideal as the Panthers are scheduled to report to camp on July 26. "Nobody came to the funeral. He didn't say anything". Carolina finished 15-1 record that season.
