  • NZ golfer Lydia Ko makes spectacular comeback in second round at US women's Open

Lydia Ko finished well off the pace in a share for 33rd as South Korea's Sung Hyun Park won the US Women's Open for her first LPGA Tour victory.

The Korean dominance of women's golf, providing seven of the last 10 U.S. Women's Open winners, was evident with the nation providing eight of the top 10 finishers, including the two new faces at the top who could further extend that domination.

The 23-year-old shot back-to-back rounds of 67s over the weekend to get past South Korean amateur Choi Hye-jin. In June 2015, Park notched up her first professional win at the Korea Women's Open and proved it was no fluke as she reeled off three more wins in the LPGA of Korea Tour before the end of the year.

Protests were staged during the final round with United States president Donald Trump present at the course he owns. She showed maturity beyond her years and hung tough until fanning a weak fade into the water short and right of the 16th green, making a double bogey that ended her chances.

The two who rounded out that group were Spain's Carlota Ciganda and China's Shanshan Feng, who entered the final round as the leader and finished tied for fifth place.

"Well, I mean I think overall, before the last hole, I did pretty well", said Feng.

"Coming to this week, I didn't have any expectation at all".

DeChambeau played the front nine in even par, then birdied six of the final nine holes to surge to the top of the leaderboard. But something clicked over the last two days, as Park carded 12 birdies against just two bogeys over her final 36 holes to ascend to the championship.

With three holes left in the U.S. Women's Open, Hye-Jin Choi was all set to re-write the record books.

She stretched clear of the field on the back nine thanks to birdies at the 12th, 15th and 17th and then held her nerve at the 18th with a superb up and down from the back of the green to salvage par. "I don't see any weak part in her game".

The Perth ace drilled seven birdies at Bedminster, New Jersey, to shoot the day's best round - a six-under-par 66 and vault to four under. "I just couldn't get the line and the speed together. It's nearly like I'm floating on a cloud in the sky", Park said through an interpreter after signing for 11-under 277.

Park helped her cause by finishing second among all players with an average of 256.2 yards off the tee, a necessity on a course that played Sunday at a robust 6,762 yards.

Choi is a member of the Korean national team and is No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, and no stranger to success at a young age, tying for seventh at the LPGA's ISPS Handa Women's Australian Open earlier this year.

Choi narrowly missed becoming the second amateur in 72 years of the event to win and first since 22-year-old Catherine Lacoste of France hoisted the trophy 50 years ago at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. "I mean, I did a good job hanging in right there because my putting was not really that great".

Mi Jung Hur and So Yeon Ryu tied for 3rd two shots behind the runner-up and four from Park.

"My last three U.S. Opens, I think I missed two cuts and last year I just made the cut so actually this year is such an improvement".
