  • Hurricane Fernanda Update: July 16, 2017

Showers and thunderstorms are developing near the center of this system and it looks like further development is possible.

The National Hurricane Center forecasts that Invest 95L has a 30% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone by Friday.

An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the first wave this afternoon if necessary.

The hurricane center said the storm could develop more over the day or two as it reaches the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean.

If it were to muster tropical storm status, it would be named Don.

After that, less favourable upper-level winds are expected to hinder additional development.

The system, located about 750 miles east of the Windward Islands and moving west at about 15 mph, had no defined center early Monday but was expected to encounter conditions that could help it intensify.

Another wave located about 800 miles WSW of Cape Verde Islands has a low potential of cyclone development.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said Monday that it is still too soon to say what, if any, effects Fernanda could have on the islands.

Hurricane Fernanda headed westward through the Pacific Ocean on Saturday as a major storm but did not pose an immediate threat to land.
