Why OJ Simpson is expected to be paroled this week

  • 20/20 digging into OJ Simpson parole hearing in Nevada

In 1995, an estimated 100 million viewers watched on television as the onetime athlete was acquitted in the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman. He was convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other crimes.

We don't know if the former Hall of Fame running back will be granted parole, but we do know that his original sentence was 33 years.

Roberts says numerous people she spoke with, including a retired prison guard, say Simpson has been a leader behind bars and should be paroled.

The former football star will have a parole hearing in Nevada.

Some believed that the long sentence he received for the Las Vegas robbery was retribution for his previous acquittal, although this was denied by the judge.

Simpson's parole hearing, scheduled for next Thursday (July 20), is expected to air live on ESPN and other networks, per Bleacher Report.

In 2013, Simpson was granted parole on a few of the 12 original charges, but the man was required to serve an additional four years for some his weapons-related convictions, including assault with a deadly weapon.

Galanter repped Simpson after his 2007 arrest for barging into a Las Vegas hotel room with guns to steal sports memorabilia he claimed belonged to him. If that happens, he could be a free man as early as October.

But given the notoriety of the Simpson trial and O.J. Simpson, a black man who went unpunished for killing a white woman, can the decision be "non personal"?

Another former parole board chairman, Thomas Patton, told NBC that the current board will not be swayed "by something that was put out in a media context".

The Board of Parole Commissioners said in a statement to USA Today that its members will issue a decision on the day of this week's hearing to minimize the media circus that Simpson creates. In the rare case of a three-three tie, parole would be denied for six months and a new hearing would be held next January.

Simpson will have an opportunity to address the board by video conference as he did during the 2013 hearing.

"In terms of what he does with the rest of his life, " Galanter said, "if he was sitting next to me I'd say, 'Listen, be thankful you got out in nine years".
