  • Turkey state of emergency

The Turkish Parliament has extended for three more months a state of emergency declared in the aftermath of a failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016, the fourth such extension since it was originally put in force.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrives in Istanbul to commemorate the 1-year anniversary of the July 15, 2016 coup attempt.

A statement from Prime Minister Binali Yildirim's office earlier Monday had asked parliament to extend the state of emergency, which was due to expire on Wednesday.

Among those listed were 2,303 police officers and 302 university academics.

"First of all we will chop off the heads of those traitors", Erdogan said as he reaffirmed previous comments to sign any bill passed restoring capital punishment.

Relations between the European Union and Turkey deteriorated since the coup bid in Turkey a year ago, which left 250 people martyred and almost 2,200 injured.

During the same speech, Erdogan denied opposition claims that the government had foreknowledge of the coup, calling them "shameless" and "immoral". Erdogan continues to lay blame to cleric-in-exile Fathulla Gulen, who lives Pennsylvania, USA.

The CHP lawmaker said government pressure on the judiciary prevented prosecutors investigating the alleged infiltration of the coup plotters and their political connections.

"No investigations have been made into how this terror organization got to such a daring point within the state, how it was placed there to attempt a coup, and new information was covered up", Tezcan told The Associated Press on July 16.

"All of those in the state's high levels have been dismissed, but there are still hidden people", Canikli said.
