The director died in his sleep following a battle with lung cancer, according to a statement provided to the LA Times, from Romero's producing partner Peter Grunwald.

Born in the Bronx borough of NY on February 4, 1940, Romero was interested in telling stories about monsters that are known to the people they frighten, his business partner Peter Grunwald told Reuters.

Romero most famously directed and co-wrote 1968′s iconic zombie film "Night of the Living Dead".

Romero's films were subversive, satirical, and sharply aware of the political climate he lived in.

Romero received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame past year.

"The zombies, they could be anything", Romero told The Associated Press in 2008. Romero shot the first of his five zombie films, "Night of the Living Dead', almost four decades ago".

Romero embraced the horror and zombie genres throughout his legendary career and he eventually put out three more films in the "dead" franchise including "Land of the Dead", "Diary of the Dead" and "Survival of the Dead". "Some consider this one of the most important American films of the last decade and it should be seen", a review in the "Motion Picture Guide" reads.

Filmmaking great George Romero has died at age 77.

"George Romero deserved to get 5% of every zombie movie made after 1968". Stephen King called him his favorite collaborator and said, "There will never be another like you".

Romero will leave a lasting legacy in cinema, and will still continue to influence filmmakers. "I feel this is my way of being able to express myself". He graduated in 1960 from the College of Fine Arts in Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. After graduating, he worked on commercials and short films.

Romero was born in the Bronx to Cuban and Lithuanian parents. He is survived by his wife and daughter, who were by his side when he passed, according to Roe.
