Marco Rubio Wants to Crack Down on Businesses Helping North Korea

  • Talks between North and South Korea are rare and usually take place at Panmunjom a truce village on the heavily fortified frontier that separates the two countries where solders from both sides face off

Tongilgak is a North Korean building at the Panmunjom truce village on the border used for previous inter-Korea talks.

The last time the Koreas held official talks was in December 2015.

There was no immediate response from North Korea.

"North Korea should respond to our honest proposals if it really seeks peace on the Korean Peninsula", Cho Myoung-Gyon, Seoul's unification minister in charge of North Korea affairs, told reporters at a press briefing.

While humanitarian exchanges couldn't relieve the threat of war, North Korea never supported the suspension of "inter-Korean sporting events or joint projects for human rights, aimed at removing sadness of the nation's division", it said.

"The last such reunions were almost two years ago".

The South Korean Red Cross suggested talks be held on August 1, with possible reunions over the Korean thanksgiving Chuseok holiday, which falls in October.

The North Korean military stated that even though the 8th US Army Command on Tuesday moved to a new base in Pyeongtaek, some 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of Seoul, the North can still successfully target the facility.

The bill would ensure companies working with North Korea are locked out of the American financial system by making the White House "block all transactions that are property of the North Korean government, affiliates, or those that do significant business with North Korea", "block any entity or financial institution implicated in any significant trade in goods or services with North Korea from the USA financial system" and "prohibit any goods made with North Korean labor from entering the United States and to impose sanctions of all entities implicated in North Korean labor trafficking". North Korea is seen as worrying that doing so could open the country to influence from more affluent South Korea and threaten the ruling party's grip on power.

The proposals come after Moon said at the G20 summit in Hamburg this month he was in favour of dialogue despite the "nuclear provocation" of North Korea's latest missile test.

"If [the leadership] issues an order, our military will destroy the United States imperialists with salvos of firings", the spokesman said. USA officials have said a military solution isn't off the table. "Now, I speak nicely about China because I really do believe they're trying to help out with respect to North Korea".

An exclusive report by Reuters reveals that the administration is drawing up plans to impose sanctions on small Chinese banks dealing with Pyongyang, as well as "shell" companies with links to North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, according to senior administration officials. -South Korea military drills.

The two Koreas restarted Cold War-era psychological warfare after the North's fourth nuclear test in January 2016. It is the first such offer under South Korea's new president, Moon Jae-in, who signaled his willingness to talk with Pyongyang during his campaign earlier this year.

Cho stressed that Seoul "would not seek collapse of the North or unification through absorbing the North".
