"We are also pleased to note that the Dutch Public Prosecution Service will make the necessary decisions concerning prosecution at the appropriate time given the criminal investigation is still ongoing".

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is calling for justice for 298 people who were killed when a Malaysian airline was shot down three years ago over separatist-controlled eastern Ukraine.

"We will pursue and prosecute the perpetrators of this outrageous act".

"It remains our foremost priority to seek justice for the families of those who perished".

Officials announced this month that the trials of any suspects arrested over the shooting down of MH17 will be held in the Netherlands.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says Russian Federation must be held to account over the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, three years after the tragedy that killed 298 people.

The flight was shot down over war-torn eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, with 283 passengers and 15 crew on board.

Monday afternoon's commemoration comes as global investigators continue their painstaking probe aimed at bringing to justice those responsible for shooting down Flight 17 and killing all 298 passengers and crew.

Global investigators have concluded that the Buk missile was sacked from Russia-backed rebel-controlled territory by a mobile launcher trucked in from Russian Federation and hastily returned. Russian Federation has denied any involvement, and denounced the conclusions as politically biased. The European Union foreign affairs chief, Federica Mogherini, called for global cooperation in the hunt for the perpetrators.

John O'Brien said some responsibility must lie with Ukraine for not closing its air space during conflict and with Malaysian Airlines, which with many other airlines continued to fly over Ukraine.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima on July 17 will join other worldwide officials at a ceremony to dedicate the memorial in the park of Vijfhuizen near Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

The monument, a curved steel wall and an eye-shaped sculpture engraved with the victims' names, stands in an amphitheatre surrounded by 298 trees - still saplings - planted in the form of a commemorative ribbon.
