Pierce announced last summer that the 2016-17 season would be the last in his National Basketball Association career, and that led to plenty of heartfelt moments throughout his final year in the league.

Current Celtics All-Star Isaiah Thomas backed off Pierce in the closing seconds, with the game out of reach, to let Pierce knock down one more basket on the parquet floor that he made his personal playground so many times.

Most importantly, Pierce helped bring Boston its only National Basketball Association title of the past 30 years.

However, Paul was traded during the 2013 season to the Brooklyn Nets.

During his 19-year National Basketball Association career, Pierce averaged 19.7 points (44.5 percent FGs, 36.8 percent 3-pointers, 80.6 percent FTs), 5.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.31 steals and 34.2 minutes in 1,343 games (1,285 starts) with Boston, Brooklyn, Washington and the LA Clippers. But after a wayward four seasons elsewhere, Pierce reached an agreement to join his former team for a day. Also as part of the Boston icon's return to Celtics headquarters: No future Celtic will wear Pierce's No. 34, per owner Wyc Grousbeck.

"It's an honor to have this opportunity to once again call myself a Boston Celtic", Pierce said in the team's press release. "He is among the very best Celtics - a champion on and off the court".

"We congratulate Paul on a Hall of Fame career, and look forward to seeing his number raised to the rafters of TD Garden", Grousbeck said.

In 1,343 games, Pierce averaged 19.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals.

In the 2002 Eastern Conference Finals against the then New Jersey Nets, Paul led his team to the greatest 4th quarter comeback in National Basketball Association playoff history.
