Phoebe Waller-Bridge, A-list Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton and Olivia Colman, who played Waller-Bridge's mother in the darkly comic Fleabag, all appeared to be in the mix following the finale of the show's 10th series, which ended at the beginning of July, while front-runners for the role included Kris Marshall, the star of the BBC series Death in Paradise as well as Whittaker.

But others were thrilled, with one post - retweeted thousands of times - showing a girl watching the trailer of Whittaker walking towards the Tardis time machine in a forest, before exclaiming excitedly: "The new doctor is a girl!"

British actress Jodie Whittaker, 35, whose casting was unveiled on Sunday, will take over from Scottish actor Peter Capaldi later this year as the 13th incarnation of the Time Lord.

"It's more than an honour to play the Doctor".

"The fans have lived through so many changes and this is only a new, different one - not a fearful one".

When Capaldi took on the iconic role, he was the 12th doctor on the long-running British science-fiction series, following Matt Smith and David Tennant. Written by a bloke called Steven Moffat (whatever happened to him?), the episode initially starred Rowan Atkinson as the titular character, Julia Sawalha as his companion Emma and Jonathan Pryce as The Master.

Whittaker anticipated some controversy over the choice of a woman as the new doctor despite such a move being well trailed, but said viewers didn't need to worry. "She's going to be a fantastic Doctor".

"Doctor Who" ran from 1963 to 1989, and was revived to acclaim in 2005. The outgoing showrunner will be handing over the show to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall.

"Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away". She added, "I've told a whole lot of lies!" "Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role".
