Influential reviewer Consumer Reports says that it no longer recommends Microsoft Surface tablets and laptops. The non-profit organization said that the removal of that designation followed a survey of 90,000 tablet and laptop users, which found that an estimated 25% of Surface owners would experience "problems by the end of the second year of ownership".

According to the Consumer Reports survey responses, the Microsoft devices were found to freeze, unexpectedly shut down or have issues with their touchscreens, Beilinson said. In a statement to the publication, Microsoft said, "We don't believe these findings accurately reflect Surface owners' true experiences or capture the performance and reliability improvements made with every Surface generation".

Altogether, the reliability issues made Microsoft a statistical outlier compared with other brands. Recommended ratings have been pulled for both the 128GB and 256GB Surface Laptop along with the 128GB and 512GB Surface Book.

Microsoft entered the hardware market with its first Surface tablet in 2012.

Several Microsoft products have performed well in CR labs, including the new Microsoft Surface Pro, which earned Very Good or Excellent scores in multiple CR tests.

USA Today further noted that "Consumer Reports based its decision off the results of an annual subscriber survey about the products such people own and use". The company recently released a fix for issues consumers reported with the Windows Hello webcam. Of course, the nature of consumer tech is that something will probably go wrong for a subset of devices over the course of their typical use. Microsoft, on the other hand, is less reliable than most other brands. The consumer group says that poor predicted reliability for the Surface range means that it is pulling its "recommended" tag.

When Microsoft's Corporate VP for Surface, Panos Panay, introduced their all-new "Surface Book" at a special event in October 2015, he was so hyped to pump his propaganda up for the press claiming that their new Surface Book was 2X more powerful than Apple's MacBook Pro. "Due to its comparatively higher breakage rate, Microsoft laptops can not be recommended by Consumer Reports at this time", the publication notes.
