Chelsea had an inauspicious start to the season when they lost Cahill to a straight red card within the first 15 minutes and Sam Vokes opened the scoring for Burnley at Stamford Bridge midway through the first half.

Wales global Sam Vokes scored two of the goals and Stephen Ward the other.

Gary Cahill was sent off early in the match for ploughing through Steven Defour.

Chelsea dominated en route to winning the Premier League last season.

Conte made a tactical reshuffle after Cahill's exit, Andreas Christensen coming on for Jeremie Boga, who had been named a surprise debutant due to Pedro's injury. Without Cahill to guide him through his defensive duties, Luiz lapsed into carelessness.

Stamford Bridge then fell silent in the 43rd minute after Sam Vokes got his second to make it 3-0 and give Antonio Conte's side a mountain to climb. Ignoring the obvious opportunity to launch a cross into the Chelsea area, the visitors played a free-kick short. "Stephen Ward has a wand of a left foot - it was a great strike, a great goal!".

Marc Albrighton served in a ideal ball from the left, curling a cross for Vardy, who capped the sequence against the run of play with his first goal of the season. The jeers were likely directed at the match officials, with Chelsea having a player sent off in both halves.

Chelsea is the league's best club on opening day.

However, rival supporters are not impressed with the actions of the Blues faithful and think they should be a bit more grateful to a team that has won two Premier League titles in the last three seasons. Not least because Willian stood up as the only player with any heart for the first hour.

Marcos Alonso's long-range drive was tipped over by Tom Heaton as Chelsea registered its first shot on target early in the second half, while Morata came on to replace the ineffective Michy Batshuayi in attack.

Morata thought he had his second when he bundled the ball over the line from Christensen's cross, only to see the linesman had flagged for offside.

A rousing comeback saw them pull two goals back in the second half, despite being reduced to nine men when Cesc Fabregas was also dismissed, but it was not enough. That was until Luiz sprinted onto Morata's pass and volleyed in to bring the nine men to within a goal of Burnley. Robbie Brady then hit the post at the opposite end from a free-kick as Burnley pushed for a fourth.
