At this year's Dota 2 tournament hosted by developer Valve at The International e-sports event, a new bot created by the startup OpenAI managed to defeat Danylo "Dendi" Ishutin, one of the world's best professional players, live on stage during a 1-on-1 match. Although AI's action-per-minute was found to be in comparison to the average human player skill level, it was able to slowly able to learn from the mistakes and develop intuitive skills to beat even the best in the game.

In accordance with the technical words of the company, Greg Brockman, the bot is able to perform the game of the enemy, and actively learn on their own.

The next step for OpenAI is to build a team of Dota bots that can both compete, and partner with, human players.

"We just let it play lifetimes of 1v1 against itself, and coached it on what we thought was good or bad", Brockman said in a video played before the match.

Elon Musk reached to Twitter to reveal the cause of his excitement while he also compared the Dota 2's complexity with Chess and Go. The fear of the AI system evolving into Skynet has since been debunked, but combined with the DOTA 2-playing OpenAI bot, we can't help but wonder what the future holds for the technology. And rather than attempt a third round, Dendi surrendered.

Players expressed surprise at the many human-like qualities the bot expressed, but Dendi did add that the bot felt a "little like something else" as well. In a promo video shown before the match we see the bot besting some of the game's top players, including Evil Genius' cores Arteezy and Sumail.

The next big step for the project is to create a team of five that can compete against a full squad at next year's worldwide, according to OpenAI. "This required massive processing power".
