  • The scene at the Gorakhpur hospital where thirty people died due to shortage of oxygen supply

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya today said the guilty will not be spared.

Gorakhpur district magistrate Rajeev Rautela had said yesterday that at least 30 children died in the state-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College within 48 hours since August 10.

Giving the stats on previous year deaths at the BRD college, Singh had said, "The paediatric deaths which took place are in August are- 567 in 2014 (19 per day), 668 in 2015 (22 per day) and 587 in 2016 (19.5 per day)".

Sharply reacting to death of 30 children in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh due lack of oxygen, Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi said that it is not a tragedy, but a massacre.

Summary: "Whosoever is found guilty in the tragic and painful incident at Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur will certainly face stringent action", deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya told reporters.

The Chief Minister of the state, Yogi Adityanath, a saffron-robed Hindu priest, is the elected Member of Parliament from Gorakhpur. There are various reasons for these deaths. The medical college has a liquid oxygen plant, which was installed two years ago.

Asserting that the Centre stands with the state government, Adityanath said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very concerned and hence, has sent Union Health Minister JP Nadda to take the stock of the situation.

"The Health Minister's statement is irresponsible".

The shortage of oxygen allegedly led to encephalitis, which is a sudden onset inflammation of the brain, following which the children died. "There was inadequate oxygen supply for those 2 hours, but the administration had ensured that there is no shortage of cylinders at the hospital", the health minister added. In the wards, nurses said they were using a combination of piped oxygen and cylinders on Sunday. Critics have blamed the oxygen shortage for some of the deaths - a claim the hospital has denied.

He also said the deaths are not due to lack of oxygen but because of different medical conditions of patients admitted in the hospital. "BJP government is responsible and should punish the negligent who caused this tragedy".

Calling it a matter of "major negligence", the Uttar Pradesh health minister Siddharth Nath Singh also sacked the hospital's principal R K Mishra.
