Balochistan's home minister, Sarfraz Bugti, said 32 other people were injured in the explosion, which targeted commuters at a bus stop. He said security operation at the blast site has been completed, but it would be premature to comment on the nature of the explosion.

In August previous year, at least 74 people were killed in a suicide attack on the city's Civil Hospital, while another 60 were killed in an attack on a police academy two months later.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), media wing of the army, confirmed a vehicle of security forces was targeted in the blast that killed 15 people, including seven citizens.

All the injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta for treatment and rescue operations are underway.

"Incendiary explosive was used in the blast due to which nearby vehicles caught fire", ISPR reported.

Quetta's chief of bomb disposal squad, Aslam Tareen, said initial information was that a suicide attacker rammed a motorcycle into a military vehicle. He said it was not immediately clear if it was a suicide blast or a remotely controlled explosive device. No group has claimed the attack yet.

The intensity of the blast was reportedly severe as it was heard in far off areas and caused a huge fire in which some vehicles and auto rickshaws were also damaged.

It cited army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa as saying terrorists were trying to disrupt Monday's celebrations of 70 years of independence from Britain. Attacks have also been reported by groups related to the Taliban.

Interviews with Baluchistan police and an internal police report viewed by Reuters described a Baluchistan-based militant network in the province's remote mountainous area of Wadh with 500-1,000 operatives led by a former military asset.
