Facebook is blocked in China, and so are many other US apps.
Western social media websites like Facebook and Twitter are blocked by China's censors, which has helped drive up the popularity of home-grown messaging app WeChat, owned by Tencent and microblogging service Weibo. The app looks eerily similar to the company's Moments app.
This isn't the only time Facebook has tried to tap into the Chinese market.
Facebook has also experimented with getting back into China by creating a censorship tool that automatically suppresses certain posts in specific geographic areas, The New York Times reported back in November. A person who knows about the plans of Facebook, Inc. said on the condition of anonymity, the tech giant released Colorful Balloons, a photo sharing application in China through a local tech company, Youge Internet Technology.
Facebook approved the release in May.
To hide Facebook's tracks, the app was released by a separate local company, called Youge Internet Technology, registered in eastern Beijing, leaving no traces of the social media platform's link to it.
It's unclear whether Chinese regulators were aware of the app, and it could muddy up the waters even further between tech companies and the country. It was released through a separate company without any hint of Facebook's affiliation.
