Fidget Spinners Might Be Really Dangerous For Children

A number of accidents caused by fidget spinners have been reported in the USA, leading a government agency to issue a warning urging people to be more careful with the trendy toy. The United States Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has a new "guidance" out with a page explaining how to safely spin a toy.

Be present when products with batteries are charging. If their recommendations on the obsolescing toy seem uninspired, well, we've been here before.

The commission also warned that small pieces of plastic and metal spinners can break off and become a choking hazard for young children.

Earlier this year, another fidget spinner was left to charge and it caught fire in less than 30 minutes. You can imagine the eyeroll that accompanied the writing of that sentence. But the CPSC disagrees, noting "they can be fun to use", and giving a list of ways to stay safe. Just make sure not to mistake it for a snack.

CPSC Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle says the agency is investigating some reported incidents associated with the popular product, including fires involving battery-operated fidget spinners. Incidents of choking have been reported for children up to the age of 14.

The guidelines were issued at the behest of the fidget-spinner manufacturers who were unsure whether their product was subject to the same regulations that govern many other toys, said CPSC spokeswoman Patty Davis. The advise even includes having working smoke alarms in your home to help avoid a fire.

However, if a spinner is designed and marketed primarily for children under the age of 12, then it is considered a "children's product" and is held to a much higher regulatory standard.

Never charge a product with batteries overnight while you are sleeping. It added that they should only be charged using the cable they came with, or a cable with the "correct connections for charging".
