Hammond and Fox vow transition will be no 'back door' to EU

But in a show of strength after a summer dominated by cabinet splits, Chancellor Philip Hammond and International Development Secretary Liam Fox announced there will be a transitional period when Britain finally leaves the UK. Their comments are being seen as an attempt to show unity between rival sides in Prime Minister Theresa May's Cabinet.

"We will leave the single market, because there was a vote for change on 23 June and that is what we will deliver".

"Once the interim period is over, we want a permanent, treaty-based arrangement between the United Kingdom and the EU which supports the closest possible relationship with the European Union, retaining close ties of security, trade and commerce". They said the UK's borders "must continue to operate smoothly", that goods bought on the Internet "must still cross borders", and "businesses must still be able to supply their customers across the EU" in the weeks and months after Brexit.

The UK will leave the Customs Union and Single Market they said, writing in the Sunday Telegraph, but there will be a "time-limited" transition period with the aim of helping business adjust and to avoid a "cliff-edge".

'That is why we believe a time-limited interim period will be important to further our national interest and give business greater certainty - but it can not be indefinite; it can not be a back door to staying in the EU.

Britain says it is ready to move to the next phase of Brexit talks and set out details of the future relationship it wants with the European Union.

The finance minister's Brexit department said it would publish some papers, including plans for a new customs arrangement and how to resolve the problems of a non-existent border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Former foreign secretary David Miliband has used an attack on the ministers spearheading Brexit to call for a second European Union referendum.

Instead many of those who voted to stay in the bloc during last year's referendum are now backing policies put forward by the Brexiteers.

"We've been crystal clear that issues around our withdrawal and our future partnership are inextricably linked", a source in Britain's Brexit department said.

Negotiations between Britain and the EU، which began in late June، have so far produced no concrete results، and Brussels has asked London to provide a clear position on key Brexit issues by the end of August. "The referendum will be no excuse if the country is driven off a cliff".

In June, the EU's Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier called for "more ambition, clarity and guarantees" around the protection of European Union citizens living in the UK.
