A state police helicopter patrolling the race riots in Charlottesville has crashed on Old Farm Road, near the Birdwood Golf Course at the University of Virginia in Albemarle County.

Police said the crash happened shortly after 5 p.m.

"There are two confirmed fatalities", the statement read. Police said they are investigating the cause of the crash.

Two people are dead after a helicopter crashed not far from the politically-spurred chaos roiling downtown Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday evening. In a video by The Daily Caller, it was first stated that a helicopter had gone down in Charlottesville. No one on the ground was injured, law-enforcement officials say. Images from the scene showed part of an aircraft in a tree.

It's unclear if the crash was related to Saturday's violence, in which one person was killed after a silver Dodge Charger plowed into a crowd of counter protesters.
