Marshawn Lynch sits during national anthem at Raiders preseason game

  • Michael Bennett on Why He Sat During National Anthem

Lynch was not one of them - the 31-year-old had retired from the National Football League and did not play last season but chose to return to his hometown Raiders earlier this year.

Marshawn Lynch, the ex-Seattle running back who came out of retirement to sign with Oakland, sat during the national anthem before the Raiders' preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday night.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio was unaware of Lynch's intention to sit but said he spoke with the veteran rusher after the game. Lynch did not speak to the media Saturday night, but the move appears to be a reaction to Saturday's violent white supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia. But I'm going to respect you as a man, you do your thing. "You do your thing".

"I talked to Marshawn to make sure we're on the same page", Del Rio said after a 20-10 loss to the Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.

"I'd rather see him take a knee than stand up, put his hands up, and get murdered", Lynch said of Kaepernick. "I can't really comment on it too much".

He would like to have played more than one series. On ProFootballTalk.com, a hive of National Football League fandom where comments come via anonymous usernames, Lynch was met with considerably more ridicule-and was called an "imbecile", "classless", and a "sad excuse for a human being". Fans will get a chance to see if their Raiders can return to the success they had last season, before an injury to quarterback to Derek Carr derailed their playoff hopes earlier than expected.
