After Trump vowed on Tuesday to treat North Korean threats of hostility with "fire and fury like the world has never seen", the Kim regime announced that it is planning to launch four intermediate-range ballistic missiles into the Pacific Ocean near Guam, a USA territory.

"The congressmen said such statements had dramatically increased tensions with North Korea and raised the specter of nuclear war".

Meanwhile, James Clapper, former director of National Intelligence, said he feared the president's rhetoric could "spiral" out of control into a global conflict. "I think we're not closer to war than a week ago", McMaster said on ABC's "This Week".

A White House statement said Trump and President Emmanuel Macron had discussed "the increasingly unsafe situation associated with North Korea's destabilising and escalatory behaviour".

US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart pledged in a phone call Saturday to work to denuclearise North Korea, but Trump again spoke of possible "military measures" if other steps fail.

"He does something in Guam, it will be an event the likes of which nobody has seen before - what will happen in North Korea", Trump told reporters Thursday from his home in Bedminster, New Jersey.

"Trump reiterated to President Macron the United States' commitment to stop the North Korean nuclear menace".

Xi for his part urged Trump to avoid "words and deeds" that would "exacerbate" the already-tense situation and seek a political settlement to the standoff, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.
