Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo said on Sunday that Venezuela could become a "risk" to the United States if chaos continues to roil the South American country.

He conducted two in July, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test, ' Pompeo said on Fox News Sunday.

"The reaction in North Korea that we are intending to get is an is an understanding that America is no longer going to have the strategic patience that it's had that has permitted him to continue to develop his weapons program", Pompeo said.

US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster echoed the tenor of Pompeo's remarks, saying the threat posed by North Korea is "coming to a head", but adding in an interview on ABC, "we're not closer to war than a week ago".

Some former security and defense officials have said that Trump's rhetoric - including a threat of "fire and fury" and an assertion days later that the USA military was "locked and loaded" in the face of North Korea's provocations - have made a volatile situation worse.

"Our response is we are prepared militarily to deal with this if necessary".

North Korea said on Thursday that plans would be completed by mid-August to fire four intermediate-range missiles to land near the U.S. Pacific island of Guam, 2,175 miles away.

Pompeo said the rhetoric from Trump was geared at sending a message to North Korea and letting the isolated nation know that the USA policy of "strategic patience" had come to an end.

"Let's see what he does with Guam", Trump told reporters, referring to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

"Trump is driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war, making such outcries as 'the USA will not rule out a war against the DPRK (North Korea),'" KCNA said.

The top US military officer, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, is traveling in Asia and expected to meet with leaders in South Korea, Japan and China.

North Korean officials in turn have accused the USA leader of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war. China, North Korea's only major ally, has urged restraint.

Trump has responded to North Korea's threats with his own fiery rhetoric.

The White House said in a statement that Trump and Xi "agreed North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behavior".

"When I served in Korea many years ago as the director of intelligence USA forces in Korea, what I was anxious about was an incendiary event getting out of hand", Clapper added.
