  • Boko Haram Army searches UN staff house in Maiduguri

Rumours have been swirling in Maiduguri that the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, has been hiding out in a compound with the same name.

In a statement emailed to journalists on Saturday morning, Shettima's spokesman, Isa Gusau, said given the critical intervention humanitarian workers have making in the affairs of internally displaced persons, Governor Kashim Shettima was anxious and had to place a phone call with ‎the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed.

"Again I reiterate we here in support of the governmrnt of Nigeria".

Attahiru stressed the commitments of the Nigerian Army to work in synergy with United Nations and other development organizations to address the humanitarian crisis in the North-East region.

As part of ongoing counter insurgency operations, the Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE has been conducting several clearance as well as cordon and search operations in urban and rural areas within the Theatre.

"The army will continue to work toward providing enabling and conducive environment to United Nations agencies to enhance their operations".

Nigeria's security forces have raided a United Nations camp in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri and carried out an unauthorised search, a United Nations official has told the BBC.

"There have been contacts - we understand from the government that this was a mistake".

In a separate statement, Ibrahim Attahiru, a commander of Nigeria's operations against Boko Haram, said the army was not trying to block the United Nations' activities.

Commenting on the raid on United Nations facility in Maiduguri, Attahiru said that the action was based on intelligence report made available to the military and not meant to tarnish the image of the UN.

"It therefore became expedient to take preemptive action by combing the general area through a cordon and search operations".

He said the military has recorded significant successes in its various operations in the theatre in over the last two weeks.

He added: "The development assisted to reduce spate of suicide bombing and insurgents' attacks". The meeting agreed to deepen relationship between security agencies and worldwide partners operating in Borno State for the good of residents.

"Peace building is a collective responsibility", he said in a statement.
