  • Walmart sorry for 'horrible' gun display

An image of a tall, glass gun case filled with rifles and topped with a sign saying "Own the school year like a hero" has gone viral on social media, with people lashing out at the retailer. Walmart corporate said it didn't mean any disrespect and the display was quickly taken down.

"What's seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores".

'Own the school year like a hero, ' the display sign reads.

The retail giant immediately launched an investigation into the image, believed to have been taken at a branch in IN, and apologised to hundreds of angry customers via their official twitter account.

'We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened, ' the spokesperson added.

In recent years, the United States has seen a number of deadly school shootings.

May said that she made her concerns known to store employees but was unable to find a manager.

People cried foul on Twitter and demanded an explanation from Walmart.

'Is this real? Literally... One person asked: "What are you suggesting?"

Initial reports were the display was at a Walmart store on Evansville's west side.

Walmart officials say they are still trying to figure out the store where the sign was posted. Thanks again for alerting us to this'.

The photo has been making the rounds on social media, drawing comments of outrage and mentions of school shootings.

That tweet, though, wasn't the first time Walmart heard about the signage situation. A banner reading "WE WILL NEVER FORGET" topped over the display.
