Egypt defender Ahmed Hegazi celebrated a memorable day at The Hawthorns on Saturday, scoring a victor in his first appearance with his new club West Bromwich Albion.

West Bromwich Albion head coach Tony Pulis has agreed a 12 month contract extension that will keep him in charge at The Hawthorns for another year until June 2019. I think we've seen an improvement all across the club in recent seasons and we must continue.

"I believe that there's a tremendous talent pool in there, and if that talent can not be realised immediately within our own ranks it is vital we get them out into league football to continue their development and education".

The demands of the Premier League make it hard to blood academy talent and Pulis accepts the priority is to maintain the club's top-flight status. We had really good opportunities and chances, we are not a possession team.

This summer Albion's only signings have been Egypt centre back Ahmed Hegazy on loan from Al Ahly and Jay Rodriguez from Southampton for £12m.

It has also been alleged that the Baggies have been considering a move for out-of-favour defender Thomas Vermaelen, who would give the Midlands-based outfit invaluable experience of the Premier League through his time at Arsenal, having lost Darren Fletcher earlier in the transfer window.

On the other hand, Eddie Howe's side had 60% of the possession in the first-half, but with no real threat on West Brom's back-line.

Pulis wants to better that achievement this term: "I've said all along that we are in a building phase which requires a step-by-step process". I thought we were ready.

"How we never scored more than one I just don't know".
