They called on all parties to de-escalate.

North Korea says it is in the final stages of preparing a plan to launch four intermediate-range ballistic missiles over Japan and into waters off the tiny island of Guam, where about 7,000 USA troops are based and 160,000 US civilians live.

Earlier this week, Trump said the USA would slam the North with "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if it provoked America again. North Korean military officials said a plan to fire four mid-range missiles about 25 miles off the island's shores would be finalized later this month.

However, the latest round of tensions firmly puts Guam at the center of a very specific and potent threat.

But Bruce Bennett, a senior defense analyst at the Rand Corporation, told CNN it would ultimately be U.S. President Donald Trump's decision whether to test their missile defenses.

"It's not something you can do without robust, full support from the South Korean government people, and there's absolutely no sign that South Korea will support military options with North Korea", Delury said. The country, still technically at war with the North after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce and not a peace treaty, has deployed the USA -built Patriot missile defence system, as well as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga also underscored the importance of the alliance, which he said would be further strengthened through a meeting between Tillerson, Mattis and their Japanese counterparts in Washington next week.

China's patience with North Korea, its onetime close ally, appears to be running thin: Beijing agreed to recent United Nations sanctions, despite potential losses to Chinese firms doing business with North Korea and fears over destabilizing the Pyongyang regime.

North Korea has short-range missiles that can hit its neighbours.

Trump's bluster, however, stands in stark contrast to an ongoing back channel for negotiations between the United States and North Korea, which came to light Friday. "The U.S. came here because I think they wanted the land and they helped us out with the Japanese, because I think they wanted the land". "The big countries should not attack each other, but unite to better cooperate on maintaining the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

USA intelligence officials are pretty sure North Korea can put a nuclear warhead on an intercontinental missile that could reach the United States. "But, I believe in the USA that they will take care of us, and between my belief and my trust in our United States president I don't worry".

"The DPRK's flagrant disregard of worldwide agreements and confrontational actions undermine regional stability, jeopardise the prospects for lasting peace in the Korean Peninsula, and pose a growing threat to global peace and security".

The heightened military activity on the peninsula this time is a concern because it could increase the possibility of a mishap or an overreaction of some sort by either side that could spin into a more serious escalation. "It's time to tone down the rhetoric".

The announcement was made after US President Trump promised "fire and fury" against Pyongyang if it continues tests aimed at developing nuclear-capable long-range ballistic missiles.

South Korea's Kospi index fell as much as 1.2% as foreigners sold shares, before paring the drop to 0.4% at the close. But North Korea would need to make one lighter to strike farther east.

Mothers told him they were "really apprehensive" because "you just don't know what's really going to happen".
