Studio estimates have "Annabelle: Creation" earning $35.0 million this weekend.

"Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature" opened in the number three spot this weekend, with an estimated $8.9 million nut.

Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk continued to have a strong showing, taking second place in its fourth week in theaters.

Nut Job 2 rolled out in theaters just days after Tang Media announced it is acquiring Open Road from AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) and Regal Entertainment. It's the sequel that no one asked for and still got, with many critics giving it negative reviews (it now has an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes).

In third is Open Road's "The Nut Job 2", which is performing well below tracker projections with $8.5 million against studio and tracker pre-weekend projections in the mid-teens.

The prequel to 2014's "Annabelle" debuts as a clear #1 at the United States weekend box office. The animated adventure tells the story of a group of animals trying to save their home from the bulldozer. While this isn't stellar for the film, it is a good sign that audiences liked it better than critics, giving it an A- CinemaScore compared to a 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate's new release "The Glass Castle" is pulling in $4.9 million from 1,461 locations. And while Disney's "Pete's Dragon" faltered, Sony's "Sausage Party" surprised with $34.3 million, or about the same as "Annabelle: Creation" this year.

The horror pic placed 2nd internationally behind China box-office sensation Wolf Warrior 2, which grossed as much as $83-M for a record-breaking total of at least $680-M in the Middle Kingdom and $685-M in world wide total box office, according to comScore.

This hasn't exactly been a banner summer for Hollywood at the box office, which - with the exception of unstoppable blockbuster "Wonder Woman" and a few others - has largely been a summer of disappointments, with high-profile releases such as "Baywatch" "The Emoji Movie", Luc Besson's big-budget "Valerian" and the Stephen King adaptation "The Dark Tower" among the many flicks to flop.
