Bryce Harper has 'significant' bone bruise

  • Washington Nationals' Bryce Harper second from right is helped off the field after he was injured during the first inning of a baseball game against the San Francisco Giants Saturday Aug. 12 2017 in Washington

Harper ripped an RBI double in Thursday's 3-2 victory over Miami, giving Washington four wins in its last five games and pushing its lead in the National League East to a staggering season-high 15 games over the second-place Marlins - a number that fell to 14 1/2 when Miami won on Friday. The Nats have had their share of injuries this season and they've fought to overcome them, but I'm not sure any amount of fight can will them past the Los Angeles Dodgers or Houston Astros without Bryce Harper.

Harper was limping but walking after the game.

Harper is expected to speak to reporters on Sunday afternoon.

Edwin Jackson, the Washington starter and victor, said, "You hope for the best. He did a job on us", Bochy said of Jackson. Andrew Stevenson replaced Harper in the team's lineup. "It's insane, but it's definitely great to see him up in spirit and walking around".

Harper was helped off the field, while putting no weight on his left leg. "It was a little wet. I certainly hope it is not too bad". "It's just one of those freak plays where you kind of thought there would be a collision and there wasn't and that might be part of it, too".

"He looked like he was in pretty good pain", Jones said. He is a key player for Washington and you hate to see anybody get hurt. "Hopefully he's all right".

"The same reaction everybody had - silence goes over the crowd", Baker said after Saturday night's game.

But the pitching of Jackson and hitting of Lind was overshadowed by the Harper injury.

That counts Saturday night's series opener that was delayed 3 hours and started at 7:05 p.m. on the West Coast.

The San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals take the field in DC in a Sunday MLB match up. At the most, it could have an effect on home-field advantage in October.

Harper suffered a hyper-extended knee, according to Washington manager Dusty Baker. Melancon has been on the disabled list with a right forearm strain since June 28 and had two strikeouts in an inning during a rehab assignment with Class-A San Jose on Wednesday.

"There is a significant bone bruise when he hyperextended the knee, so although we feel like we dodged a bullet a bit here with any long-term ligament and tendon damage".
