  • Fresnans hold vigil in light of Charlottesville violence

- Services in remembrance of the victims of Saturday's violence in Charlottesville, Va. were held across North Carolina on Sunday, including a Vigil for Racial Justice and Equality in Durham.

It was put together by Industrial Workers of the World, also known as IWW. White nationalists took over that fight and senseless violence broke out injuring more than two dozen in total including those injured when a vehicle plowed through a crowd. What happened in Charlottesville, I'm afraid that's probably just the beginning.

"I felt like everyone needs to show up and let people know that we are exhausted of the violence, racism, and hate, and we are ready to stand up and say no and move on".

"I don't believe in white supremacy ..."

For Sampson, it's more than just solidarity for those lost.

He said Trump's quote "on many sides" was particularly deceptive.

"In Germany, they don't talk about Hitler, or they don't have statues of Hitler around".

"We need to be showing our unity by supporting people of color-led organizations, that's how they'll know we're serious", said one speaker at the vigil. "If things are going to change, it's going to happen with our children", she said.

People who attend are encouraged to bring their own candles. The issue is about Southern Heritage and History, and preserving history as it was, not as people would like it to be, he said.

"What it means, loosely translated, is: I've got to take care of you and do my best to make you your best so that you can make me my best".

Taking down the statues, according to Kiernan, would give the people of Jacksonville a voice and give them choice in who is celebrated in this city. "We are a respectful people, a civilized people". One said, "Rest in Power Heather Heyer", to honor the 32-year-old woman who was killed on Saturday when a vehicle driven by James Alex Fields Jr. plowed into a group of counter protesters, police said. Only one person was removed from the park following a skirmish with a man holding a Confederate flag. Posts on a popular website called 4chan cite Jacksonville or Gainesville as the next 'battle ground.' Beware when clicking this link, the language is vulgar.
