Seven Florida football players are suspended for the season opener September 2 against MI, the school announced Sunday.

Linebacker James Houston, offensive tackle Kadeem Telfort, defensive lineman Jordan Smith, defensive lineman Richerd Desir-Jones, defensive end Keivonnis Davis, and linebacker Ventrell Miller will all miss the MI game.

Callaway has dealt with off-field problems in the past, including a citation for marijuana possession in May.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing", coach Jim McElwain said in a statement released Sunday by the school.

Davis, the next biggest contributor of the bunch, appeared in all 13 games and started five last season. His 5 quarterback hurries last season tied for second on the team.

The No. 16-ranked Gators open the season against MI in the Advocare Classic on September 2 in Houston against No. 9 MI.

Florida's depth at defensive end should be fine with the quartet of CeCe Jefferson, Antonneous Clayton, Jabari Zuniga, Jordan Sherit and true freshman Zachary Carter. Fellow lineman Desir-Jones appeared in two games last season but has switched to defensive line this season.

Telfort was competing for a backup spot at offensive tackle and took first-team reps at points during the couple practices when starting left tackle Martez Ivey was out. "I think one thing I've seen him do is really learn to trust, number one. That's good to see".

According to Sports Illustrated, only two of the seven total players suspended against MI was likely to actually start in that game. Miller, Houston and Smith are first-year defenders.

It is unclear what punishment the players received, though some players have missed practice time. He's also a threat on special teams as well.
