Latin America rejects USA military threat in Venezuela

  • Who's worse? President Trump or President Pence

"We have many options for Venezuela, including a possible military option if necessary", Mr. Trump told reporters in Bedminster.

Trump, like a child with new toy, has just discovered that threatening Venezuela and North Korea can improve his image in the United States.

Several Venezuelans also dismissed Trump's words as "imperial interference".

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi on Sunday condemned the US President Donald Trump provocative and meddling remarks on Venezuela's internal politics, IRNA reported.

The leadership of the crisis-wracked nation - Latin America's biggest oil producer and an ally to Russian Federation and Cuba - suddenly found itself going from battling dissent, protests and growing global isolation to contemplating USA military action last seen in the region in 1989, when American troops invaded Panama to topple its president, Manuel Noriega.

The Trump administration slapped sanctions on Venezuela after a vote last month allowed President Maduro to replace opposition-dominated National Assembly with a new 545-member Constituent Assembly filled with his supporters.

"President Trump will gladly speak with the leader of Venezuela as soon as democracy is restored in that country", a White House statement said.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza on Saturday said that Trump's comments threatened peace and stability in his country.

Former Argentine Ambassador to Venezuela Alicia Castro: And the one who endorses a U.S. intervention in his continent, risking the life and peace of us all, is also a miser.

Pence's trip will also take him to Buenos Aires, Argentina; Santiago, Chile; and Panama City, Panama, where he is expected to deliver a number of speeches, meet with the country's leaders and tour the newly expanded Panama Canal.

Regional alliance Mercosur added it rejected the use of force against Venezuela, despite having indefinitely suspended the country last week amid worldwide condemnation of Maduro's new, all-powerful legislative superbody.

"I think Pence's problem is that he is going to come to Latin America and people are going to ask him, 'Are you speaking on behalf of President Trump, are you speaking on behalf of the United States government?" Although the Venezuelan military is obviously no match for the American one, it is far from a pushover and if it resisted an invasion, the ensuing conflict "especially in densely-populated Caracas, would undoubtedly lead to a catastrophic loss of innocent lives".
