On Saturday, Charlottesville saw a major rally of far-right nationalists dubbed "Unite the Right" which subsequently led to violent clashes between the demonstrators and counterprotesters.

A man named James Alex Fields Jr. has been identified and accused of killing one woman and injuring 19 others when he allegedly drove a speeding auto into a group of people Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Charlottesville Police Chief Alfred Thomas Jr. told the Daily News that Heyer was one of 20 people struck by the man believed to be the driver, 20-year-old James Fields Jr.

Along with a second-degree murder charge, Mr Fields faces three counts of malicious wounding and one count of leaving the scene.

Following deadly violence during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, Twitter users took to the social media site to decry racism by identifying the "white supremacists" present at the rally. "We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of bigotry hatred and violence on many sides", he said at an impromptu press conference.

Friday night white nationalist organizations from around to the country descended onto Virginia to protest the ordered removal of former confederate general Robert E. Lee's statue from Virginia State Grounds.

McAuliffe said at a news conference earlier in the day that three people had died, apparently a reference to the woman who died in the vehicle crash and the two victims of the helicopter crash.

Although a few cars were held up by the march, police say the demonstration is peaceful and there have been no arrests.

The death toll includes two Virginia State Police officers who were killed when their helicopter crashed near Charlottesville.

Sessions said the federal investigation "will have the full support of the Department of Justice".

President Donald Trump tweeted condolences to the troopers' families earlier Saturday.

The White House on Sunday released a statement that said "of course" Trump condemns "white supremacists, KKK, neo-nazi and all extremist groups".
