Tottenham Player Ratings: 2-0 at Newcastle

  • Tottenham's Harry Kane will aim to open his account against Newcastle on Sunday

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle averaged a goal every 93 minutes in the Championship last season, scoring 23 goals; he also scored in his last top-flight appearance against Spurs for Crystal Palace in January 2015.

Pochettino's side have struggled at the national stadium in recent times, including in their awful Champions League campaign past year where they did not make it out of the group stage.

Rose apologised for his comments in a statement released shortly before Spurs' press conference to preview tomorrow's Premier League match at Newcastle.

The Magpies picked up 48 points on home soil last season and have been a real bogey team for Tottenham down the years, winning their last two meetings when they were back in the Premier League. Sometimes I was a player and sometimes after seven months when you don't play you're frustrated.

However, unlike many of their competitors, Spurs do not have the financial clout to spend hundreds of millions on players to build on their first-team squad ahead of next season.

The 27-year-old, reportedly a target of Manchester United and Chelsea, hit out at his club's lack of spending and silverware relative to their Premier League rivals this season.

This weekend there will be no Kieran Trippier - injured against Juventus in pre-season - and Victor Wanyama is also struggling. It's all the more impressive given the two separate periods he sat on the sidelines for recovering from ankle ligament injuries. Offensively, Tottenham will depend on Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son to score goals, with Christian Eriksen providing service.

"The balance is the most important".

The club have dismissed the worst fears many of their fans would have shared at the beginning of the summer - a blossoming squad being dismantled by the lure of greater financial rewards elsewhere. But, that hasn't reduced his popularity in the transfer market one bit, as evident from the interest shown by the Red Devils.

Goalkeeper: Hugo Lloris will once again lead Spurs in to the new campaign as Pochettino's first choice goalkeeper and French global is expected to be a key figure for the north Londoners this year.
