  • Iraq: two US soldiers killed, five wounded in internal incident

The troops were taking part in operations against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

In May, a USA service member died in Syria after being injured in a vehicle roll-over.

The Islamic State is increasingly on the defensive in Iraq and Syria after its defeat in the Iraqi city of Mosul and as USA -backed forces advance in the militant group's onetime stronghold in the Syrian city of Raqqa.

Two Americans were killed and five others wounded Sunday while conducting combat operations in northern Iraq, the US military said.

The cause of the casualties has not been released by authorities but "initial reports indicate the incident was not due to enemy contact", the DoD said, adding that the incident is under investigation. Two coalition service members died in non-combat related incidents in Iraq, one in January and another in February near Ramadi.

The Coalition, made up of dozens of countries, has been active since 2014, fighting a mainly aerial campaign against IS.

"There are no words to describe the respect I have for you and sorrow I have for your loss", Lt. Gen. Townsend continued.

USA officials have said that they expect a hard battle in Tal Afar, where 20,000 to 40,000 civilians remain in what has been a busy hub for Islamic State leaders.

As of June, there were now around 6,100 US military personnel on the ground in Iraq as part of the multinational campaign to eliminate ISIS, according to the Department of Defense.
