What Can Trump's Opioid State Of Emergency Actually Do?

  • President Donald Trump dashed claims that he is not on vacation but actually'working hard at his New Jersey property when he was seen today on the golf course today while the conflict with North Korea raged

"The opioid crisis is an emergency, and I'm saying officially, right now, it is an emergency", Trump said at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf course on Thursday. Either way, this was a well-considered judgement based on the president's careful analysis that opioids are not acid.

Christie said so much during his WPG Talk Radio interview hosted by Harry Hurley Friday while vacationing in Sicily, a 30-minute long conversation touching on the crisis just a day after Trump made the declaration. I'll tell you what, and they should be very nervous, because things will happen to them like they never thought possible.

The President's Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis was established in March and just last week issueda preliminary report and urged the president to declare a national emergency, according to the Washington Post.

Jeff Myers, president and CEO of Medicaid Health Plans of America, said he hopes the declaration would include expansion of medication-assisted therapy, or MAT, programs. States and cities ravaged the most by the epidemic can use federal disaster relief funds or request other types of emergency aid.

Afterward, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price told reporters that declaring a national emergency is a step usually reserved for "a time-limited problem", like the Zika outbreak or problems caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

"This declaration will help provide communities in West Virginia and throughout the country more resources to tackle this awful epidemic and ultimately save lives", Capito said.

National estimates found almost 33,000 people died in 2015 due to opioid overdose, but several reports have found even those numbers could be severely underreported, meaning the total number of overdoses could be much higher.

Trump drew criticism recently after transcripts of a call with Mexico's president showed him describing New Hampshire as a "drug-infested den".

Donald Trump is not mentally equipped for the presidency, and his basic instability is pushing the United States toward a military confrontation with North Korea. But, he also noted that "it's really unclear" what effect a federal emergency declaration would have on the opioid crisis specifically.

The increasing drug problem in Greater Cincinnati has been declared a national emergency. Despite Christie's bullying and bluster on most issues, his willingness to tackle opioid addiction seems heartfelt and real.
